My name is Awinash Mahabier and I live in Den Hoorn (South Holland). I completed a bachelor's degree in Finance & Control (Business Economics), supplemented by a minor in Risk Management & Behavior.
Prior to my current role at Ditio, I gained valuable experience as Cost Controller and Works Council Member at Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). In this position I worked within the Finance and Empty Container departments, where I not only further developed my analytical skills, but also actively contributed to process optimization and strategic decision-making. These experiences taught me the importance of combining numbers with an understanding of processes and people, and further strengthened my passion for delivering meaningful impact.
After an inspiring trip through Southeast Asia, I came across Ditio's vacancy. The professional and pleasant application process immediately gave me a good feeling, and since March 2024 I have been employed at Ditio with great enthusiasm.
I enjoy working as a Project Controller through Ditio. In this role I am responsible for monitoring the financial progress of projects, analyzing risks, preparing reports and advising project teams and stakeholders. As Project Controller I ensure that projects are carried out within scope, planning and budget, and assist in making informed decisions throughout the project cycle.
I am also deputy chairman of the Works Council at Ditio. In this position I represent my colleagues, monitor their interests and contribute constructively to developments throughout the organization. I support the chairman and take over his duties when necessary, focusing on clear communication, involvement and strengthening cooperation between employees and management.
My most recent assignment through Ditio was as Project Controller at Tata Steel Netherlands. There I was involved in various projects, including crane projects and dry runs. In this role I enjoyed working, gained valuable knowledge and was able to use my expertise to make a positive and qualitative contribution to the project results.
I like my job because of the combination of challenging projects, flexibility, room for personal development and the opportunity to use my knowledge and experience to make a positive impact on our clients. It gives me energy to continuously grow while achieving visible results within the projects I work on. The balance between development, responsibility and meaningful work ensures that I go to work every day with pleasure and motivation.
What makes my work at Ditio extra special is the flexibility, the wonderful organizational culture and the helpful colleagues around me. It feels good to work in an environment where cooperation, trust, quality are key and an internal team that is always ready to think along. Values that give me energy and with which I enjoy contributing to the success of both my projects and the organization.
One of the most enjoyable projects for me was the Crane P3&4 project at Tata Steel.
As Project Controller, I was intensively involved in the project and had the opportunity to apply all aspects of PRINCE2 in practice. My main contributions were:
- Cost Management: Worked with the Project Manager to prepare a strongly supported cost estimate; converted costs incorrectly booked on CAPEX to OPEX to avoid problems with the auditors. Converting was challenging because the document was already formally approved, but management was open to my explanations and took the appropriate steps.
- Project follow-up: Created action lists for the weekly project meetings, which ensured quick follow-up on open issues.
- Issue and risk management: logged all issues with financial impact and risk owners in the risk register, even when there were doubts or opposition, for clear and transparent communication.
- Advice and quality: Advised the Project Manager where necessary and sought advice from the Senior Project Controller to ensure continuous quality of my work.
- Core tasks Project Controller: Performance of regular tasks such as planning, budget monitoring and reporting.
The project had several challenging and complex phases, but by realizing a carefully reasoned Product Description Phase, we laid the foundation for a high-quality execution. It was particularly inspiring to see how our structured approach and collaboration ultimately resulted in concrete, visible impact.
One of the greatest moments at Ditio was when I heard that I was given the opportunity to start at Tata Steel Netherlands as Project Controller. It felt special to be able to apply my knowledge and experience to such a large and complex project, and it was the starting point of many valuable challenges and learning experiences in my career.
I see Ditio's future as an organization that continues to grow in expertise and impact, helping customers with innovative and quality solutions. For myself, I hope to play an increasingly important role in this: gaining new knowledge, leading challenging projects and contributing to team development. It seems particularly valuable to me to help build on our ambitions while making a visible difference for customers and colleagues.
