Ditiosi speaking: Lamis Shuker

What is it like to work at Ditio? That's what we ask our employees themselves. This time it's Lamis Shuker's turn. Lamis started at Ditio in 2023 as Junior Project Controller. She is happy to talk about his experience at Ditio and the Talent Program.

Lamis, can you briefly introduce yourself?

My name is Lamis Shuker and I can officially be called a Ditiosi since June 2023. If someone would have told me 1.5 years ago that I would be working as a Project Controller in the near future, I would have looked very strange. After all, I have a background in a completely different field. I studied Biomedical Sciences and studied Neurobiology during a master's program. From an early age, I have been interested in the most mysterious organ: the brain. At the top of my list of 'Highlights' are my research internships in Dick Swaab's lab (at the Dutch Brain Institute) and at the University of Cape Town (South Africa).

How did you end up at Ditio?

I can hear you all thinking; "But what do you do at Ditio now? The only answer to this, which perhaps as a Project Planner I shouldn't say out loud, is that not everything in life can be planned. Sometimes the best you can do is to row with the oars you have and be open to what comes your way. When I had a new job right after the corona period where I wasn't enjoying myself, suddenly there was a LinkedIn message from a recruiter who was working for Ditio at the time. After a few phone calls with the recruiter, I had the honor of meeting Sylvia and Alfonso. That's how I ended up at Ditio.

What role do you fulfill at Ditio?

I am currently filling the role of Project Planner at a chemical company that makes epoxy resin. This is my first assignment through Ditio from the Talent Program and I am having a great time. Although I was initially worried about my lack of technical knowledge in this industry, I have found that you quickly compensate for a lack of theoretical knowledge with the right dose of motivation and courage to ask questions. Moreover, it is also quite reassuring that you are never alone as a Ditiosi. Not getting anywhere? The number of the senior planner who briefed me is under speed dial!

I am also a member of Ditio's Works Council and fulfill the role of Secretary. This is my first Works Council experience and so there is much to learn. It gives me a satisfied feeling to be able to represent the interests of my colleagues and have a positive influence on the management of the company.

What does the Ditio Talent Program entail?

As a young talent at Ditio, you will be part of the Talent program. During the first couple of weeks you will be expected at the head office in Rijswijk, the Netherlands, where you will attend a series of presentations/trainings on project management and the related management areas (time, scope, money). These trainings provide a solid foundation and prepare you for what to expect at your first client. The Talent Program continues for the first 2 years of your employment with Ditio. This means being invited to various courses that give you additional tools to further develop as a project controller. But more importantly, as a Talent you have a say in your development. Discuss your wishes with your manager/talent manager to come to a personal development plan together.

Would you recommend the Talent Program track?

I can answer this question briefly and powerfully; yes definitely! As we speak, Ditio is busy optimizing the Talent Program. By integrating the talents' input, the goal is to make the program even better suited to their needs. In addition, Ditio is in the process of shaping the program more clearly. This will enable the development of the talents to be guided in a structured and effective manner.

What is a memorable moment within your career at Ditio?

I find it hard to name one memorable moment at Ditio. However, what I will always remember from my time at Ditio is the wonderful, open atmosphere in the office and among colleagues. It is difficult to describe and may sound like a huge cliché, but I truly felt at home in Rijswijk right away.

How do you envision your future at Ditio?

You know me a little by now and so you also know that I don't like to make distant future plans. But I am someone who is always striving for (self)development and who never stops learning. I would like to taste more of the different flavors within Project Controls Management and Ditio gives me that opportunity. Once I have gained more experience as a planner, I would also like to delve into Cost and Risk Management to ultimately be able to make an informed choice about which path I want to take.
