Schiphol - Redevelopment Departure Hall & Lounge 1

For Schiphol, we proudly contributed to the redevelopment of Departure Hall 1 and Lounge 1. An impressive project in the heart of an operational airport, in which we worked to increase capacity, comfort and sustainability for millions of travelers.

Purpose of the project

The project aimed to increase the capacity of Departure Hall 1 and improve the passenger experience. A new mezzanine was built with 21 modern security lanes equipped with CT technology. In addition, the facade was relocated for additional space and improved access to the Panorama Terrace. In Lounge 1, approximately 5,000 sq. ft. was added through smart redesign of former crew areas. The lounge was given zones like "Relax" and "Explore" with new hospitality and retail concepts, all developed with sustainability in mind.

Ditio's Expertise

Within this project, Ditio was responsible for planning - a crucial factor within such a complex and dynamic project. Our planner was closely involved in coordinating all construction and installation activities. Through tight operational planning and continuous consultation with construction partners such as VolkerWessels, ENGIE and the ESAP combination (SPIE and Equans), the work was carried out without disrupting airport operations. Safety, traveler comfort and cooperation were key.

Challenges and solutions

Working in an operational terminal requires extreme precision, flexibility and coordination. The biggest challenge was integrating new technologies and expansions without disrupting daily operations. Thanks to our pragmatic approach - clear communication, tight detailed planning and risk management - the project was completed without incident and with minimal disruption.

Results

The renovated Departure Hall 1 and Lounge 1 now provide a faster flow, greater comfort and a greatly improved traveler experience. More than 90% of the construction waste has been reused, and the installations have also been made more sustainable. Thanks to good cooperation and tight control, safety and efficiency during construction are maximally guaranteed.

What did we learn in this project?

This project highlighted the importance of flexibility, cooperation and clear communication. Working at an airport requires shifting gears in the moment and thinking ahead. We have further deepened our expertise in risk management and operational planning - experience we will take with us to subsequent complex projects.
